An Introduction

We’d awoken far too early on new year’s day. Mim and I had decided to brave the cold morning to find a coffee. As we sipped our espressos we fantasized about our first vacation together. Somewhere nice, somewhere warm, even in winter. She said Europe. I said Thailand. She said Portugal. I said Thailand. She said maybe. I found a flight.
The next day we booked our flight. I always use www.skyscanner.com for flights as i like the way they show flight data, and lets me adjust my flexibility. It was only 24 hours since that coffee and we would be landing in Bangkok in three weeks!

Flexibility is the key. We were able to find round-trip flights for $1000 CAD each which is good compared to the average 1500+ you would normally pay.

So why Thailand?
The food. Abroad the food is almost always amazing, be it in a resort or from a person with a small charcoal grill on side of the road. Actually nine times out of ten I’ll go with the person selling cheap street food.
The beaches. Aside from the food Thailand offers some of the world’s most beautiful and secluded beaches if you know where to go.
The price. Finally it’s still definitely one of the cheaper places to travel through for a month compared to the US, Europe or North Korea.

Planning
We visited both the north and south of Thailand. If you book them early enough in advance domestic flights can cost as low as $20, often saving a full day of travel. With under a month’s notice we ended up paying closer to $40 per flight. I looked into the north, Mim looked into the south. She grabbed a magazine on eco tourism (Thailand, The Natural Guide) looking into some nice islands to visit. The Thai islands have a reputation of being a place to party but there are many relaxing ones. In the end we planned to visit the jungle and three islands in the south, one small town and two big cities in the north over the span of 20 days.

On January 26 we grabbed our bags and got on a plane headed for Beijing.
